He advises Dasharatha to apportion the kheer amongst his three wives. Rishyasringa arranges to perform yajna, during which a divine figure emerges from the fire, carrying a chalice of kheer. When their family priest, Vasishtha visits the palace, he advises Dasharatha to seek Sage Rishyasringa's blessings to beget a son. However, Dasharatha has become sad that if he were to die, he has no heirs who could continue his Ikshvaku dynasty. For her valiance, Dasharatha has promised Kaikeyi two boons that she can ask from him at any time. In his chambers, Dasharatha recounts to his other queens, Kausalya and Sumitra, how Kaikeyi saved his life on the battlefield. Meanwhile, on earth, King Dasharatha and Queen Kaikeyi return to their palace after a battle. In the heavens, Prithvi asks Vishnu to save the earth from Ravana's atrocities, upon which Vishnu promises to reincarnate on earth in human form to destroy evil. When they reach Lanka, Rama battles Ravan and ultimately kills him, signifying triumph of good over evil. In their search of her, Rama and Lakshmana create a friendship with Hanuman, Sugriv, Jamvanta, and their army of apes. Twelve years into the exile, Ravan, the King of Lanka, abducts Sita. They gain the blessings of numerous wise men and sages along the way. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana wander the forests, combating evil wherever they encounter it. ![]() Upon Ram's insistence, Bharata rules as his proxy over Ayodhya throughout the 14 year exile. Bharata decides instead to bring back to the palace Rama's paduka and places them on the throne as a gesture that Ram is the true king. However, Rama refuses, bound by his duty to carry out his father's promise. When Bharata learns that his mother is responsible for Rama's exile, he follows Rama and begs him to return with him to Ayodhya. Ram reluctantly accepts the company of his wife, Sita, and his younger brother, Lakshmana. ![]() Rama happily accepts the exile and leaves for the forest. Reluctantly, he asks Rama to leave for the forest. Although heartbroken, Dasharatha is compelled to keep his word. Recalling that Dasharatha had once promised to grant her any two boons that she asked of him, she demands first that Rama should be exiled to the forest for 14 years and second that Bharata should be crowned ruler in his stead. Rama is to become the king of Ayodhya upon his father's retirement, but his stepmother, Kaikeyi, under the influence of her maid Manthara, desires that her son, Bharata, become the king instead. The serial brought about a much greater understanding of the epic in a way that no amount of reading would have brought about, and also served to highlight the values and culture embedded in the epic.Ramayan narrates the tale of Rama, who was the eldest of the four sons of Dasharatha, the King of Ayodhya. This was covered through an extension of the serial called 'Uttar Ramayan', created on public demand. The serial took the whole story of the Ramayana from before the birth of the God Rama and all the way till the story of how he re-discovered his sons, Luv and Kush when they had grown up to be child warriors. In addition, it opened the floodgates for more mythological and historical serials after that. At one time, it set a record for the world's most watched mythological serial. Roads would be empty when the serial came, and woe betide a electricity board office if the light would go off people would gather and raise slogans and threaten. ![]() In smaller towns or villages, a single set would have a large number of people watching the single set. If a neighbour had a TV, you would go there to watch, or go over to a relative's place. Television in India was not so common then, and yet, people found a set somewhere to watch. It ignited the religious thought in people like nothing that had been seen. India had never seen something like this serial. It started coming on Doordarshan Sunday Morning at 9:30 AM from January 1987 to July End 1988. The serial took the epic and presented in a dramatized form. The man behind this was creative genius Dr. I remember, that time our neighbors came to our home. Viewers across the nation regardless of their religion or age were glued to their or neighbors TV sets. That time TV was young but the impact of Ramayan serial was overwhelming. I remember we have Dinero black and white TV set with a wooden sliding shutter. This is another childhood serial of Doordarshan.
